Abstract. Probably Lionel Beale (1867) should be credited with the first reference in the medical literature on the use of cytological methods for the diagnosis of cancer of the digestive system. In his book „The Microscope and its Applica tion in Clinical Medicine“, Beale published several drawings of gastric and esophageal cells which he thought to be malignant.

It is less invasive than skin biopsy and quick to perform, with results available immediately. 1979-07-01 · Exfoliative cytological procedures, based on the sticky slide and detergent scrub techniques, were used in the nonintrusive collection of horny cells from the skin surface of volunteers 20 to 30 yr of age and 65+ yr of age. DEFINITION Exfoliative cytology (EC) is the microscopic examination of shed, desquamated cells from body surfaces or cells harvested by rubbing or brushing a lesional tissue surface. It also includes cells harvested from mucus membranes and body fluids.

2006-03-23 · Static cytometry permits the quantification of DNA content in cells obtained by exfoliative cytology. However, routine Haematoxylin-Eosin staining is inadequate for this purpose, and special techniques are required to ensure that staining intensity is in proportion to DNA content.
